Another obscure detail of WWII history: The T-34 was a design rejected by the US War department and sold to the Russians because they were the only interested customer. The tank was years ahead of the US Sherman, which was designed by the usual compromising committees of political staff officers and pointy-headed engineers from the manufacturers (and was nicknamed "The Purple Heart Box" by the first crews who took it up against the panzers.)

Yet the Reds imported hundreds of Shermans. Why? Because they had installed wireless radios, which were forbidden by Stalin in Russian tanks. Until late in the war, panzer crews knew that they could knock out the little vehicle with the antenna and stop an entire armored attack cold.

In Stalinist Russia-even in a desperate war-few could speak without being herded into the Gulag ..
