Hi TJ - Note that the same stability applies if Japan does have some nukes.

Except they gain a degree of deterence against Kim Jong Il.

Plenty of time to develop this if North Korea goes any farther.

I expect that Kim would like to be in position to say - trade with us, and don't block out financial games, or Kyoto gets a warning shot.

A Japanese nuclear force would not eliminate that, but would reduce the North Korea edge.
