Any hit behind the turret set off the fuel. But-despite all that-one should probably give the poor Sherman a little credit:

It couldn't go muzzle-to-muzzle with the Germans' equipment, but few WWII battles required that, and they usually broke up within an hour or less.

But one might call it the Volkswagan of tanks. The Panzer V-ten years ahead of it's time and the engineering inspiration for the splendid US M48 in the 50's-couldn't pass a motor pool, while the Sherman crews-carrying a few spare parts (obtained by hook or crook)-could stay on the road and on the battlefield consistantly enough to make up for its quantitative deficiencies.

The better tank crews learned with experience to aim and fire the 76MM gun while the tank was moving, and still accurately hit targets. Every other army had to stop their tanks and shoot. That ability to fire on the run made up for a lot of too-thin armor.

A larger tank with the much-demanded larger gun was introduced late in the war. But it would still be accurate to say that the Sherman over-ran France, Belgium and Germany. Give the US soldier something even in the ballpark, and he'll go out and destroy the enemy.

The new 21st century urban "terror" war is tricky to learn and much doctrine is still to be developed. But if we are smart enough not to listen to the Democrats screaming for us to piss our pants and run away, subhuman Islam is doomed...
