There's gold flakes showing:

Report Reveals 22 Million STB Units for Digital TV in US
September 26, 1997 Comline Telecommunications Wire

According to California-based Multimedia Research Group (MRG), there could be some 38 million TVs nationwide receiving digital programming by the year 2000 if US broadcasters speed up their switch to digital TV.

MRG expects that of these 38 million TVs, 22 million units will use set-top boxes (STB) for existing NTSC- format TVs, while 16 million units will use specialized HDTV terminals for viewing pleasure. These findings are based on recent interviews with a dozen broadcasters and equipment makers. Broadcasters are concerned about the cost of digital production equipment and competition from other digital services media, such as cable TV, satellite TV and the Internet. Big changes in the market are likely to closely precede or follow the national broadcast equipment fair held by broadcasters and equipment makers in April 1998.

If the figures prove out, that's 38 million V chips by the year 2000 either sold or licensed by Zenith to recieve the digital signals.
Assuming that Zenith profits about $20 per chip, that's $760 million of pure profits to ZE by the year 2000 alone.
