Not all that much different from other jurisdictions - we speak of 'freehold' and 'fee simple' and all that fine olde english yeomanry self-delusion of independence, but try this experiment in British Columbia - Don't pay your taxes for about a year and an half, and then tell us who 'owns' 'your land' -g-

[edit] - i do agree with jack's post [next after this one], that there is a perception of imminent confiscation possiblilities, and it's not going to go away easily, and that perception is the hard reality du jour ... just meant to make the point that in no country is the individual considered sovereign
