The statement doesn't say anything about happiness. It mentions wealth and material development. Reporting that we have greatly increased our wealth and material development is not equating "stuff" with welfare or happiness.

Also I would maintain that at least for lower levels of "stuff" and wealth, an increase is strongly correlated with an increase in well being or happiness. People are less happy and less well off in many ways if they are near starvation.

I do agree that wealth is hard to compare over generations, much less over millenia, but by any reasonable standard his statement is mostly true. You can certainly argue over the exact percentages and the exact time frames (and I did, in a reply to the SI post that I linked to) but the overall point is completely true.
