Nope. No HDTV is necessary. All you need is to do is upgrade to digital service (in most cases that requires you to upgrade one level above basic cable (in my case it was to Digital Plus) & use their digital converter. That is all I needed to gain free access to 'On Demand'.

Keep in mind that On Demand is soooooo much more than the free CSI's too. They offer 100+ free movies. Most of these are solid choices & quite a few stinkers (what do you expect for free), but they are not the latest releases. A few of their totally free movies include:

As good as it Gets
The Bounty
Bull Durham
Crimson Tide (unrated extended version)
Dances with Wolves (SE) the 4 hour version
Ghostbusters
The Great Escape
Good Will Hunting
Guns of Naverone
Jerry McGuire

They offer in excess of 100 offerings from cable favorites like the History Channel, Discovery, TNT, TBS, A&E, Lifetime, E! & much, much more. These too are regularly updated & most are commercial free, plus they too can be paused, rewinded, etc. too.

They have similar free offerings from all manner of Sports related cable, like the NFL Network - I love their 10-12 minute highlights of every NFL game (commercial free). It the best, most detailed game highlights available anywhere.

Now I do have 2 additional premium packages - HBO & Starz/Encore. That gets me every version of HBO (HBO Family, Comedy, East, West, etc, etc.) & all versions of Starz & Encore. Although they aren't necessary to get 'On Demand', they also offer a boatload of movies, specials & all of their original series On Demand too. All of this additional On Demand video is free to paid subscribers to HBO, Starz/Encore, Showtime, etc.

Every month they update the movies they offer On Demand just like they do on the normal Cable channels. Of course the added advantage is you can watch any movie, etc., precisely when you want to watch it, plus you can pause, rewind or fast forward just like a DVD.

One of the reasons I chose Starz/Encore is that they offer a good selection of Director's Cuts, extended versions of movies & a lot of them are available in widescreen. Also, Starz/Encore offers more than 100 movies to choose from. They are regularly updated - far more bang for your buck than any other premium movie subscription IMHO.
