Compression will be needed for storage for many years, but as
bandwidth rolls out, first within companies, then through WANs,
finally through the Internet, it will pay to use bandwidth as
a replacement for compression and other specialized processing
of packets. You are correct that this is a long term prediction
from the Fibersphere theory, based on WDM and other technologies
that will eventually allow terabit rates down fiber. The bottle
neck in this picture is actually Moore's Law, and companies will
have to learn to use bandwidth to compensate for the slower
development of chip technology relative to photonic communications.
