Yeah, I read the exchange. It was Coug's comment that inspired my comment here. <G>

I don't know how far our Constitutional Republic is from the ability of some group in power to declare martial law. Even in a state of "national emergency" (as was declared after 9-11 and continued for three years, very quietly), Presidential Orders carry the weight of law. If some future terrorist were to nuke Washington DC, I could easily see the entire nation being under martial law immediately. If the apparatus is already in place to declare members of the opposition party, or even just dissenters, as "combatants," a roundup is entirely feasible, IMO.

So, yeah, I think the "Hitler gauge" is reasonable.
