Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy... I have never liked this fellow ever since his blatant opportunism after his stint in the short lived Kim Campbell government...

Ontario MP Garth Turner has been suspended from the federal Conservative caucus.

Turner will sit as an Independent in the House of Commons.

Caucus chair Rahim Jaffer said Wednesday that Turner was ousted in part for critical comments made about the party on the blog that he has maintained on his website since the federal election last January.

"There have been different attacks at different times. We've got quite a significant record of them," Jaffer told reporters, adding that the posts included criticism of the prime minister.

"This has been a culmination."

The decision to oust Turner, the member for Halton, came on the recommendation of the party's Ontario caucus. Jaffer said there were concerns regarding Turner over caucus confidentiality.

Unanimous votes

"The theme of confidentiality was not being respected in their opinion and it restricted the ability of members to operate," Jaffer said.

Jaffer said the suspension was a long time coming and the votes were unanimous.

Shortly after the Conservatives came into power, Turner spoke out against former Liberal MP David Emerson's defection to the Tories.

Wednesday's development changes the party standings in the 308-seat House of Commons. The 124 Conservative MPs form a minority government, and there are 101 Liberal MPs, 50 Bloc Québécois MPs, 29 New Democrat MPs and two Independent MPs.

The Commons also has two vacancies. Liberal MP Joe Fontana resigned recently to run in a municipal campaign and BQ MP Benoit Sauvageau died in a traffic accident.
