we just took a few steps down that path

Agree. The nature of everything is progress, some of which is difficult to say actually involves progress and is probably only advancement, from bows and arrows to rifles to future NK well-delivered devices.

Perhaps not in our lifetimes, but in our childrens' lifetimes, and certainly, positively in their childrens' lifetimes, the end of the path will beckon. It will not be a pretty sight.

One must hope that with progress will come good will and wisdom but I doubt such a rosy resolution.

As Dolinar Janko wisely said earlier on, "[w]hat we need is just another kind of human race."

In 2002, Mr. Warren Buffett, a very smart man well acquainted with the nature of risk, articulated something we all fear and know will happen yet ignore in our economic plans: a nuclear or dirty nuclear weapon will absolutely, positively some day be set off by an Islamofascist in the US, probably in in NYC or DC, and all economic hell will break loose. Your gold will come in very handy then.
