For the very reasons you suggest, poets make the best fiction writers. John Straley and Richard Hugo both wrote very fine mystery novels. Straley is more well known for his mysteries than Hugo, but Hugo's "Death and the Good Life" was mesmerizing. Hugo was the poet laureate of Montana. Straley still lives and writes from Sitka Alaska. Hugo called himself a poet of place. I've been many of the localities in which "Death and the Good Life" takes place, and I kid you not, my skin started to crawl when I read it. I could almost tell which motel room or which bar he was in.
