Different leaders appeal to more or less parochial elements depending on their leadership qualities and how they are perceived. Some leaders have almost universal appeal. Some leaders can meld people of even the most disparate interests and spotlight their common ground. You are correct about Reagan. Clinton, likewise, was disrespected by a large number of people. The best leaders command respect even in disagreement.
