Charles,

I am trying to find the explanation of what the "patch" capability is for new x86 chips. However, I am positive that it only works for instructions which are in the microcode.. you can not possibly fix hardwired silicon instructions..

As for SUN, I do believe there is a lot of confusion as to which source they want to take. Witness their recent workstation/computer products.. all are based around the Java platform. If the get the performance of the Java chips up to their "targets" it will make the Ultrasparc a moote point.
