With zero government spending the economy might fall flat on its face. But the majority of government spending doesn't benefit the economy. Some government spending is truly useless. Some is even counterproductive. Some government spending does probably have a net economic benefit when considered in isolation, but the benefit is lower than the benefit that would have been achieved by private investment of the same funds.

You mean the salaries that gov't pays its employees who, in turn, buy goods and services don't benefit the economy??? You mean the salt for icy roads that gov'ts buy in the winter or the trucks they buy to clear the roads don't benefit the economy??? Where did you learn economic theory?

I'd agree with you that administration of justice, and some basic infrastructure, is best provided by some level of government. An argument could be made that government funds for scientific research and education also help the economy. But add all of those together (and throw in whatever level of defense you feel is necessary to protect the country) and you still only have a fraction of government spending. (And the defense part, while necessary is still in a direct sense economically harmful

Tim, once again, it looks like you have been brainwashed. To suggest the above paragraph is the only benefit gov't provides the economy is either brainwashing or a lack of understanding of economics. Nearly everything gov't does benefits the economy in one form or another. The only argument you have is that people might spend the money they pay in taxes more effectively than gov't........and even there I could argue that issue into the ground.

The truth is GOPers are cheap......they hate parting with their money esp. when its to pay taxes that benefit others as well as themselves. <end of story>
