Andrew:

For historical perspective Sun has already used Ancor switches, since 1995 (and probably earlier). They are very high on FC as opposed to SSA as indicated in the following article:

Additional hypertext links can be found in this Sun x Ancor SI search (sorry I could not figure out how to retain the hypertext links on each message):

Sun can easily market a storage product at any time. The competitive aspects of their choice of a switch vendor have been thoroughly discussed. Ancor nearly missed the boat before they came out with their current state of the art switch. Western Digital, Compaq, Seagate, and Sun have all pushed the adavntages of FC largely with the idea of being able to add large amounts inexpensive storage.

This concept is not new by any means. I have had long discussions with a senior disk drive engineer who worked with the first RAID systems in the early 80's. He told me about a system that was set up to download satellite data to RAID, during a very brief window at a specific point in the orbit. He also told me that the advantage that RAID has over tape storage is read time.
