St. Milton used to hammer on the difficulties of overcoming the iron triangle: politicians, beneficiaries and bureacracies. Given the constant expansion of all three legs, I fear we may have passed the point of no return (see Mancur Olson). Further, I 'spect the Republic's fate was written in stone before any one here was born.

In '80, again in '94, I thought things were turning. Given the abject failure of the Republican majority I'm guessing that a resurrection is most unlikely. Now I watch, interested, from the sidelines, and hope the good outlasts my grandchildren.
