Nihilism at it's worst. No thanks.

Hmmm, well, I got something else out of it. The love of the father for his son was not the stuff of nihilism as was the ending, which exhibited hope. In a lot of ways, The Road is IMO one of his most uplifting novels despite the setting.

In any event, CMc's writing is never cheery. He harbors few illusions about the human animal. The Judge in Blood Meridian and Chigur in No Country for Old Men represent the sum total of humanity, IMO, and it's not a pretty sight. In fact, it's downright brutal and elemental.

I read most authors for their craft, not their message. CMc is one hell of a craftsman in that regard. The way he writes is pure poetry. In fact, until you made your comment, I had not really thought about his nihilism, though I will admit as a father of a ten year old that The Road affected me more than most books.
