The 11th commandment -- that energy resources are, by definition, fungible -- is sheer folly.

I count Afghanistan (perceived need, at the time, for safe pipeline route*) and Iraq (rather obvious to even the most indoctrinated) as resource wars numbers 1 and 2.

* the projected and hyped Soviet x-satellite "istan" oil bonanza has since turned bust - with expected reserves cut by a factor of 10 --- which explains why the US is cutting and running...
