Thanks for posting. I hope you return and tell your friends about this goody.

Here is a summary of their products for those who aren't familiar with their technology.

RealNetworks is the established market leader and pioneer in the delivery of real-time media over the Internet. RealNetworks is also the creator of the RealMedia Architecture (RMA), a platform for streaming multiple data-types over the Internet and codeveloper, with Netscape Communications, of the Real-Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP), a proposed open standard for the delivery of real-time streaming media.

Based in Seattle, RealNetworks develops and markets software products and services designed to enable users of personal computers and other digital devices to send and receive real-time media using the today's infrastructure.

The RealAudio System:
RealNetworks' RealAudio system is a client-server based streaming media delivery system for the Internet. With the RealAudio Encoder and Server, providers of news, entertainment, sports, and business content can create and deliver audio-based streaming multimedia content through the Internet.

With the RealPlayer, users equipped with conventional multimedia personal computers and voice-grade telephone lines and higher bandwidths can browse, select and play back streaming multmedia on-demand, in real-time without download delays, as quickly and easily as using a standard cassette player/recorder. The RealPlayer, RealPlayer Plus and RealAudio Encoder are available for download from the RealAudio Web site (http://www.real.com). RealAudio 3.0, released on September 17, 1996, incorporates substantial sound and transmission quality improvements for streaming audio on the Internet. Features of version 3.0 include stereo sound over 28.8 modems and near CD-quality sound over ISDN and LAN bandwidths using DolbyNet technology, live broadcast capability to large audiences, robust UDP resend technology for more reliable audio delivery, bandwidth negotiation, and HTTP-based pseudo-streaming for light streaming of small audio files from a regular Web server.

Since the introduction of the RealAudio system in April of 1995, over 10 million Players have been distributed including 8 million from the RealAudio Web site (http://www.real.com) with over 45,000 downloads daily. Thousands of RealAudio Servers are currently delivering over 45,000 hours per week of audio and streaming multimedia content on the Web.

The RealVideo System:
RealVideo delivers ground-breaking video quality for Internet broadcasting by fully exploiting new 56kbps standards, while delivering compelling newscast quality to existing 28.8kbps users. RealVideo delivers video and multimedia interactivity with the flexibility and tools to create a new experience on the Internet. All of these features and capabilities are combined with RealNetworks' unmatched ability to deliver reliable transmissions over the real life conditions of the Internet. RealVideo 1.0 introduces full motion video with existing RealAudio technology to bring a quality multimedia experience to the Internet. RealVideo, anticipating the delivery of the new 56.6kbps modems, is optimized to deliver the maximum performance at 45kbps, resulting in a reliable, high-quality video experience over 56kbps dial-up connections, across ordinary phone lines. However, the most prevalent connection rate on the Internet will continue to be 28.8kbps for some time.

In conjunction with the RealVideo 1.0 release, RealNetworks is introducing three new low bit-rate audio codecs to maximize available bandwidth for video, resulting in high quality, high frame-rate video for news broadcast, and high quality, low frame-rate for music video and high action content.

The RealMedia Architecture (RMA):
The RealMedia Architecture is a framework of client and server API's for the development of streaming multimedia applications. It is the third generation client-server system created by RealNetworks, designed to allow independent software companies to build or adapt their software to be streamed from servers and played by clients which support RMA.

Leading RealMedia partners building applications on RMA include Macromedia, Iterated Systems, Live Update, OLiVR, FutureWave, in:sync, Vivo, and many others. These partners have created applications which allow synchronized playback of animation, MIDI, slides, 3D pictures, and more, in addition to RealNetworks' audio and video.

The Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP):
RTSP is a communications protocol for the control and delivery of real-time media developed by RealNetworks and Netscape Communications and announced on October 17, 1996. It defines the connection between streaming media client and server software and provides a standard way for clients and servers from multiple vendors to stream multimedia content. Widespread support for this unified standard will help ensure interoperability and give application developers more flexibility in developing robust multimedia applications. The first draft of the protocol specification, RTSP 1.0, was submitted to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) on October 9, 1996.

Current leading supporters of RTSP include Apple, Sun Microsystems, Adobe, Narrative Communications, Silicon Graphics, Vivo, IBM, Hewlett-Packard and many others.
