>>Smoking is a terrible health hazard. But that does not excuse the lie that was perpetrated for years and years regarding health care costs. This was a big issue in Canada where health care is (cough, cough and look askance)--free. The Canadian Government did a study through Health Canada (I believe it was in the late eighties) which proved that smokers paid far more than their fair share of health costs because of the exorbitant tobacco taxes and because of their UNDER UTILIZATION of the health care system due to early death, etc. Naturally, the study was allowed to disappear into the dustbins of old archives...

To advocate smoking is idiotic, although one supposes it may still be useful in treating pneumonia. The right to smoke is another matter. I do not, btw.<<

I wasn't aware of the Canadian study, but I'm not sure it is relevant to the States anyway. Health costs here are quite different, due to the "for profit" structure of our system. One also has to calculate he costs to families of early deaths.

I do agree that people have a right to smoke. I used to, but haven't for twenty years. What they don't have a right to do is to bother other people with their smoke, health issues aside. If I were to burn incense everywhere I went, I'm sure a lot of people would object. Even when I did smoke, I was keenly aware of the rights of others to breathe unfouled air.
