Bob, Knowing you as I do on SI I don't doubt you.

Here in Ontario we have public and separate boards, basically the Catholic, both funded by taxpayers. In my opinion here the difference is less between the boards and more on finding the right school. I realise you are likely talking of a school more akin to my high school. Yes that was great and I graduated with enough credits for two kids to get into university as well as the name itself carrying more weight than a public school.

Sidebar..
both funded by taxpayers problem there is with our 'multicultural' bent.. other groups are pushing for funding also. The dual system is a throwback to confederation.

Both my kids started in French immersion. My daughter had essentially the same classmates from kindergarten through Grade 8.
Basically kids with parents that are focused on the kids' educations in and out of school.

At high school there are choices. She could have gone to regular high school, stayed in the French immersion with mostly the same classmates or apply to a specialty high school. (all have university bound academic streams). She had the opportunity to go to a special public school specializing in arts, visual and performing and was accepted into the visual arts program. I encouraged this for two reasons. One she has talent and two I like the idea of her continuing in a school where the kids 'want to be there' ... Along this theme.. when she graduated from grade 8, out of the 7 classes there was only one French immersion. Of the kids graduating with honors fully two thirds were from the immersion class as well as winning a disproportionate portion of other awards such as leadership etc..

My daughter skis, skates, swims, and snow boards well. She studies Mandarin (we all do) which she will eventually get a high school credit for.. and a bunch of other stuff.. (yes though at 14 she thinks her generation is going where no generation has gone before... is she in for a surprise LOL) My son also but not quite as well yet of course, except for the skiing which just might be his special talent..

Well rounded, confident, and doing the best they can in all endeavours.. Expect their best shot and let them know you are happy with their best shot whatever it is.

It's just another way of working it..

BTW the Catholic high school I went to was my choice and required an entrance exam. My folks didn't have the coin but I got subsidized.. I wanted to 'be there' :o)

regards
B
