The only problem is this: Only sales are reported to the IRS. You list all the sales on schedule D, and for every sale, you have to list what specific lot of shares you sold. You might have bought and sold the same shares 50 times this year, so you have to put down which of the shares you sold each day by giving the purchase date of that lot. This can make a difference whether the sale netted a profit or a loss.
