I thought Saving Private Ryan was scaled right for the topic

I thought it was perfect. And tough to take. The problem with violence now is twofold. One, they want to surpass "Ryan," and two, doing it episodically instead of in one fell swoop.

For instance, they have this scene late in the movie where two GI's go into a tunnel to check it out with flashlights. Then, one by one, they show the corpses of the Japanese with everything blown out from shoulders to crotch. They have taken hand grenades and held them to their middle and committed suicide. Early in the film, a GI is blown up by a shell. As his buddy looks around for him, his head bounces on the dirt in front of him, cut off at the neck. They mix in lots of "severed limbs" shots throughout the film.
