No doubt actual war is a good deal worse than anything we could see on the screen, however gratuitous. I don't think war should be sanitized, but neither do we need to have our noses rubbed in it.

Did we discuss William Manchester's book "Goodbye Darkness?" Whatever one thinks of Manchester, I thought the book did a good job of displaying disenchantment with war.

From my fat dumb and happy perch here, insulated from combat by my 1Y draft card when I was young and now by my age, I find it hard to fathom how those men endured what they did, or even how they managed to climb down the net to the landing craft.
