Most Americans can name every country within 1000 miles of their home, outside of small islands in the Caribbean.

In my experience it is about the same in Germany.

Ask an American who the Prime Minister or Prez of Canada or Mexico is and he probably won't know. Ask a German who the Prez or Prime Minister of Poland, Czech, Switzerland, Denmark, the Netherlands, or Belgium is and he won't know.

There is no way I would defend most Americans' lack of knowledge about the outside world, but I do not see a big difference in other places.
