People with illnesses or people who have gone through serious hardship are of course not automatically right about issues related to the illness or hardship, much less right about anything else, but they tend to get a special position in debate (at least if they are liberal or supporting liberal causes).

You can respect what someone has been through and have sympathy for them without giving them a privileged position in politics. Ann Coulter pointed that our when talking about some 9/11 widows, but saying things like they "enjoyed their husbands' deaths" made her point get lost in the controversy over her words.
