I went through this FTD / Naked Short discussion as well as watching the darkside presentation after Covad Communications (DVW) tanked 6/30/06 after being added to the Russell 3000 index. It appeared that almost all the additions were up within two weeks of 6/30, then right before closing had a large trade go through under the money. In Covad's case it was trading around $2.15 in late day trading, then a 16 million share trade went through at $2.01, then the following weeks found it spiraling downward. Apparently the funds that purchased the 16 million shares bought them from a MM that kept them as a short position. The published short position went from less than 1 million shares to over 16 from May to June. The shorts still haven't covered and the stock is hanging around $1.45. Manipulation in this market is very real, and retail investors are the direct target, whether by unscrupulous MM's or Hedge Funds or other WS Bogeymen.

Here is a list of the 2006 additions to Russell 3000. You should be able to paste this into a Yahoo chart to see what happened at 6/30. Interestingly, the Russell 3000 deletions mostly operated in reverse, with a late day spike in price.
