Who's he trying to fool?

Betsy's Page

Tim Mahoney, the Democrat running in Florida's congressional seat that Foley held, is playing coy about whether he would support Nancy Pelosi for Speaker.

<<< “I have not spent two seconds thinking about that,” Mahoney told MSNBC talker and former Republican U.S. Rep. Joe Scarborough during a Tuesday interview in which Scarborough tried four times to pin down Mahoney on the Pelosi question. >>>

Mahoney knows that the Republicans are using Pelosi as an argument to motivate Republican voters to vote for Republican candidates. And in a Republican district like Florida 16, that is a powerful argument. So, he has to be noncommittal in his response to that question. But, of course he is going to support Pelosi. Does he think that we are going to believe that the Democrats are flooding that district with money to elect Mahoney if they didn't know that he'd vote for Pelosi. I don't buy that there are any Democratic House members who would endanger Pelosi's ascension to the Speakership if the Democrats take the House. They'd be cutting their own throats in their party - Pelosi has demonstrated that she doesn't forget or forgive old opponents.

This seat might not be such a goner for the GOP. Byron York reports on some initial signs of success that the Negron campaign to educate voters that they have to vote for Foley in order to elect Negron with the inspired slogan "Punch Foley for Joe." This is a natural GOP district and people aren't stupid. They'll have heard dozens of time how to vote for Negron by voting for Foley. And they won't be fooled by Mahoney's pretense of indifference to a Speaker Pelosi. (Link via The Sixers)
