I don't even think it often is that productive. If it worked in terms of getting support and votes, you might have the argument that we shouldn't "declare a unilateral ceasefire", or "unilaterally disarm", but I think attacks on people based on their disability, or non-self inflicted negative situation are more likely to help than hurt the side that makes the attacks, and it risks getting the solid point that going through difficulties doesn't automatically make your right on an issue. It doesn't make sense to defer to someone on an important political issue just because they have been through a tragedy or because they have an illness, but I think we should make the point directly rather than making an attack. It will probably be attacked as insensitive anyway (even if it isn't) but it has the benefit of being the "high road", and also is probably better as a tactical choice.
