Perhaps the best show on TV right now is set in a frontier gold mining camp in the process of being annexed by the US in the late 19th Century, and hence has much to do with swindles. If you can deal with lots or swearing, sex, violence, and the like, everyone should really check out Deadwood. Once you get past the profanity -- which in my experience matches the way men actually talk in the modern equivalents of these places -- you will realize it is an extended examination of the rule of law, and especially of what kind of people end up in these places and how they apply their morality and conscience in the absence of the rule of law. The acting, led by the likes of Molly Parker and E. Powers Boothe, is truly amazing, far beyond anything dreamed of in network television. It shows on some cable station in the US, and the History Channel here in Canada is showing the past seasons, two episodes back to back every Monday night. LC
