Do you really think you have understood/interpreted the first paragraph as the author had intended to convey. It seems you were eager to slam him from the get-go!

Just consider for a moment: who would not instinctively practice self-preservation? or cut one's losses?

I believe the author had in mind of sailors doing their darndest to head for the lee shore as opposed to windward shore (or even seek protection behind the rocks, asuming there was enough rocks for that). Note that the author mentioned a lee shore (that is, a shore protected from the wind).

Have you done any sailing where you were actively engaged in
manning the sails, ropes and/or helm? If you had, you would have known of the efforts and moves sailors routinely attempt to avoid disastrous collisions.

Never jump to conclusions! Very often, there's more than meets the eye!
