My point is not that Americans know as much as others so much as it is that others know as little as Americans.

Not in my experience. I can't say for Asians or South Americans but most European countries have citizens more aware of the world outside their own borders. It makes sense, if you think of it, as most basic education in say UK, France, Spain, Holland will certainly cover their Colonial past. I know that most Brits, at an early age, know where "the Americas" are, Australia and N.Z, Canada. On the other hand I've met adult Americans who think Europe is one land mass and aren't aware the U.K. are Islands.
