In both cases, I believe that it's irrelevant. Lynn Cheney's daughter is a lesbian, but I don't think that changes who Lynn Cheney is.

Same with Webb. I don't care to read his books, but passages in them do not necessarily mean he's degrading women or anybody else. For all I know, the protagonist could be fighting against that which is demeaning.
