Can't see what's so hard to understand. MJF is being accused of - in effect - exaggerating his suffering in order to influence the outcome of a political election. Apparently, he admitted using this tactic in his book.

Let's try a different example. Perhaps, seeing this from a different angle will help.

Let's say, an insulin-dependent diabetic stops taking insulin. Soon, he is in an Intensive Care unit in a hospital, very sick, fighting for his life. Having recovered, he uses the footage of his suffering for a political commercial - claiming that he suffered because the opponent of his sponsor voted against embryonic stem cell research, which - supposedly - could lead to finding "cure" for diabetes.

Once again, we sympathize with the sufferer. Once again, there are claims that stem cell research may bring "cure" for diabetes - as opposed to having mere "treatment" - insulin. So, the analogy is actually pretty good.
