Plan to Ban Free Plastic Shopping Bags [NYT]
By RAYMOND BONNER
Published: July 19, 2006

Australia’s second largest state, Victoria, is proposing to ban free plastic bags. The state government hopes that supermarkets and other outlets will voluntarily stop giving plastic bags to customers, but they will be required to charge a customer the equivalent of seven cents a bag under the proposed legislation, which is expected to pass. “Non-biodegradable plastic bags kill substantial numbers of whales, seals, turtles and other marine wildlife and can take up to 1,000 years to break down in the environment,” said John Thwaites, Victoria’s environment minister. He said about 10 million plastic bags were now being used and disposed of each year.
