JON CARROLL -- Please Stop Right Now

I HAVE JUST a statement and I'll take my answer off the air. It's more of a plea than a statement, OK? It's from a concerned citizen who has never harmed a major appliance intentionally.

I don't want any more computer upgrades. None zip zero. I do not want to buy another computer or install another operating system in my old computer.

I do not want a new chip of copper or any other metal. I do not want a 50 percent improvement in my flash memory because my flash memory is already so much faster than my actual memory that I start chewing speaker cable just thinking about it.

And I especially don't want Windows 98. The New York Times recently published an article alleging that Windows 98 was not really that much of an improvement over Windows 95. ``Hot damn,'' I thought, ``maybe people won't buy it, then. Then maybe people won't produce software that is compatible only with it, and I'll be able to use my current computer for at least as long as I use my current microwave.''

And be candid here -- don't you want Intel to fail? It's the Michael Douglas of computer companies, all jut- jawed and arrogant,
whipping international commerce into a frenzy. Maybe we could start a rumor that there are spiders in all the Pentium chips and they crawl out through your CD-ROM drive and bite your ears. Would that be enough to slow it down?
