(Maybe I should start a local service here in the Washington burbs to take folks a couple miles from their homes to the nearest Metro station. I could probably get a WiFi download of quotes and news to my handlebars, and some much needed exercise to boot. Nice synergistic value play.)

When I started investing from home, my costs dropped through the floor. Easily $1.25 per day dry cleaning, $8/day automotive, lunch, etc. I figured about one hour's worth (12.5%) of my daily earnings went to the commute and keeping up appearances. And that doesn't include the value of my time spent sitting in traffic.

The lack of face time does pose a problem. You say poor corporate management. I think a lot of fresh hires who intend to get ahead will want to be seen by the big bosses as much as possible. It is a shame that the quality of one's work often pales in comparison with the sales job required to get attention.
