"Man will never fly" isn't really equivalent. He's not saying "hydrogen vehicles will never work", only that they won't be cost effective.

Of course if someone said "aircraft will never be cost effective" he would have also have been wrong, but that statement would not have been as unreasonable, and it certainly is true that many ideas, even if technically feasible turn out not to be cost effective. Will hydrogen be cost effective? Its possible, but it won't happen soon, and its not a forgone conclusion to ever happen. Alternative sources of energy or alternative ways to store energy will at some point be cost effective, but hydrogen isn't automatically the best solution.
