interestingly enough last weekend I attended a lecture on fuel cells by a university professor who does research in this area. Of course it was dumbed down for people like me but it would appear that there are significant efficiencies to be derived in microelectronics and then in home heating pushing the natural gas into a fuel cell first and using that to create electricity and heat. Still years away however in terms of government acceptance writing of standards and the like.
