The Hungarians kept fighting even after Soviet tanks arrived, believing help was on the way. Hundreds died. And Western policy in the region suffered a setback from which it took nearly 40 years to recover.

A former pro-US "revolutionary" once bitterly told me, "only a fool would climb down the well with the Americans' rope. They'll leave you hanging in the dark at a whim." I don't think most Americans, even those in the policy making bodies, know what a great credibility crisis this country has abroad.
