The system used in Alaska seemed good to me. You go to the polls, sign next to your name. If your name isn't on the precinct's list, your vote is accepted but put in a challenged category. It is evaluated if the spread is narrower than the number of challenged ballots, and accepted unless the challenge prevails.

The actual ballot is a sheet of paper on which you mark through a template with a pencil. The template prevents marks in any location other than the ballot choices. After balloting, you feed the ballot into a machine which counts the vote electronically and stores the ballot for backup.

It's a sort of combination electronic/hard ballot that is quickly tabulated and easily recounted.

And it doesn't have any chads.
