As I said, PNAC emphasizes military and hard power whereas CFR wants to try soft power backed by hard power. CFR is smarter and looks more respectable and at margin is more humane. But how different are the goals really?

There is, of course, the realist, who argues that it's all about protecting US interests without the misplaced use of military force to impose US political structures on other countries.

There is, also, a Joseph Nye kind of position, which may be what you mean by "soft power" which accepts the notion of US interests in the middle east but points to the use of multilateral means by which they are protected.

And as Hillary put it, they are all realists and internationalists...the combination comes pretty close to what I said, imo, depending on what you believe the goals of realists are.

Are you arguing that the US has no interests in the ME?

Of course not. I am arguing that US has no legitimate interests in the ME. "Legitimacy" here is defined according to Libertarian principles.
