"I figured I'd make Clifford squirm with that dilemma, but apparently he already figured out how to resolve that."

In my experience, AS was painting with way too broad of a brush. Some of both Vietnamese and Cubans fit his model, but many do not. For example, when I was working for Tampa Coca Cola, the Cuban mechanics didn't strike me as coming from well off families. Or Tu, another guy I worked with at UTMB. He was RVN in the war and his base got surrounded by the North Vietnamese. So everyone who could slipped out over night and traveled through the jungle to the coast. He and several others managed to get their hands on a fishing boat and they spent the next couple of months trying to find a country who would allow them to land.

None of these people were wealthy. All were extremely anti-communist. Which is why they were staunch Republicans.
