After Tet (when the Vietcong were weakened) and particularly by late in the war.

Look up the Eastertide offensive. Americans were mostly gone by then but the South (with American air support and re-supply) fought off a large invasion from the north. Then look a bit later and the south did fall after the north invaded and we refused to provide air support or re-supply (congress cut off the funds).
