Portents. Lovely word. That'll do but I'm trying to think of something else. If you think of symbolic meaning as layered, with deeper layers of more significance, then consider very small symbols within deeper layers as reconfiguring the entire field. Something like that. Sorry about the abstractions. I try to stay away from that but my word memory needs some serious exercise.
