But who's going to maintain it all? If solar panels were as durable as, say, our highways, it wouldn't be that big a deal, but they're more fragile and thus more prone to the elements.

Like I said, it doesn't work that way. I'm all for solar power, but let's be realistic about its limits. Hence I'd rather put my hopes in other technologies like cold fusion (if it's even possible) ...
