I'd rather see the 100 square miles on people's roofs. The "maintenance" you're so worried about, which actually consists of a yearly dusting off, could be done by the homeowners. Photovoltaics are solid state - not a lot of maintenance required.

Ask Wharf Rat (SI member) about it. He's got a photovoltaic system on his house that usually runs the entire place in the daytime. He says he gets a kick out of watching his meter run backwards.
