Well that was fun! The other boy is being suspended (can you believe that? These are 7 year olds) and the Principal wants me to talk to Nicholas and tell him its never ok to hit. I agreed to do that and then I requested we have a discussion off the record. I said "I don't know where you grew up but where I grew up it was always ok to defend yourself." He then said no - thats the teachers job. I said then why am I here? He gave me kind of a funny look so I explained myself and asked him which teacher was responsible for student defense today? He then stuttered around a little and I just listened because I didn't want to give him an out. I let him talk until he made no sense at all and then I relieved him from the verbal purgatory he placed himself in. At that point I explained my position and pointed out that I didn't want to see the kids fight but I also don't want my son to feel as if he doesn't have the right to defend himself. He reluctantly agreed and we shook hands and I walked out of his office. When I left I saw the mother sitting there with her son. The woman actually wanted to sit there and read me the riot act in front of her son and I said I couldn't because I had an appointment. I'm not going to argue in front of a child! Now for a bold prediction - those two boys will never have a battle again - mark my words. My son is a lefty and apparently the other kid didn't realize this because he had a shiner under his right eye and both his lips were puffed up on the right side. It looked like my boy performed quite well without any instruction LOL. Now for the most important part - using this experience to teach him so that he learns from it. He and I don't usually get together on Thursday but tonight we're going to. We'll have a little pizza and have a man to little man talk and I'll make damn sure that he comes out a better kid because or in spite of what happened. I'm really proud that I allowed him to make the decision rather than doing it for him. He can't learn from my experiences anymore than I could learn from my fathers. You learn from personal experience and thats what we'll work with tonight.

I'm debating whether to start calling him Rocky LOL!! I gotta say that was one damn nice shiner he handed out LOL!!
