So, what in the Hell is 'abandonment' about leaving now that those jobs are done?

The government and the US are allies in the current conflict. Perfect allies?, of course not, but still allies. We leave while the fighting is still going and yes we have abandoned them.

(Either way though, the West stands to benefit.)

I don't agree. In fact I think considering that idea to be a slam dunk is ridiculous. We don't benefit from wide spread bloodshed, and we don't benefit from radicals gaining power. The only thing that would be a benefit is if relatively moderate forces would gain control without a lot more bloodshed. It would be nice to be able to leave now, and leave behind a moderate peaceful, stable Iraq, but I don't think that would be the result of the pullout.

Re: "and finally and more directly 3 - I think they would indeed consider themselves as having won a victory by "forcing" our pullout, even if they suffer later losses after that."

WHO?

As I've said several times now, all the anti-American radicals in the conflict.
